Martinborough is a town that I know pretty well. I've been visiting Martinborough since I was a little boy - my parents had close friends who had a little farm there. We had lots on fun on that farm.
Back to the present.
Some friends decided to have a mid-winter Christmas celebration in a big fancy old house that we've often stayed in. I supplied some background music along with my trusty backing tracks that kept playing away while I had a sip, or two, or three of my Cleanskin.
I also visited a vineyard run by the son of a very old, and long gone, friend Willie Brown.
Willie's second son Shawn. |
Shawn is a really nice guy with a great sense of humour. I'd visited him about 12 years ago but I knew that he wouldn't know who I was. As we spoke, I dropped in lines like, "You remind me of your mother." Soon the truth was out and I explained who I was and how I had worked with his dad. I bought a $50 bottle of Pinot Noir, which we all tasted back at the house (though I'd also had a taste at the winery) - it was very nice, really a lot better than some Cleanskins. Then something special happened, he gave me a bottle of wine made by his father in 1991. He said he was unsure of the quality. I intend to keep it unopened and on display in our house as a memento. He asked me to toast his father and mother when I open it. I certainly will do that.
I didn't realise that wine bottles could have such complicated labels. |
RIP Willie. |

A good story.
Willie name Muirlea Rise after his wife Lea.
I wonder if Sean still makes 'Apres' the fortified wine that Willie used to make and you had to drink some from the barrel every time you visited.
He ket the barrel topped up with left over wines from tastings (hopefully not from the spittoons but you never know), dregs from other bottles red or white or fortified that he's opened, buts and pieces of liqueurs and spirits - you name it son, he'd put it in.
It was surprisingly nice though.
R.I.P. Willie.
By the way that's a very rude gesture you seem to be making in that first photo.
I won't comment on your shoddy proofreading today.
"He ket the barrel topped up..."
I can see at least four spelling mistakes and also named Shawn wrong.
You're slipping.
By the way you also misspelled Shawn's name.
"May God's divine mercy take him to Heaven."
Well, he died quite a few years ago Robert so I guess wherever he was going he'll be there by now.
Can I please have a few more comments?
"If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."
This saying especially relates to snowflakes like you who might melt.
There you go = two comments.
Thanks!
The comments are getting up there.
Up everyone's noses you mean?
Look, I don't mean to be rude - you know me - but instead of obsessing about comments on your old posts, shouldn't you be putting an effort into writing new posts? Your output is slowing down and, frankly, people are talking.
Thanks for the comment TC.
Jeez!
Thanks again.
It must be that strange stuff he eats at Mass. he's had a double dose so be careful.
Hey, thanks all for the comments. This is indeed a very popular blog!
I love you comments.
You should try Facebook/Neighbourly sites and get discussions going. You'll get a lot of comments that way ....... oh, I forgot ...... you got kicked off those sites years ago.
