Okay, God creates the angels. Let's assume that he gives them free will so that, if they fuck up, it's their own fault. Remember, if He doesn't give them free will, God is responsible for whatever they do.
Now you must remember that God is all knowing and therefore sees the future (which, incidentally, must make His 'life' a bit boring). As He is about to make the angel Lucifer, he knows what Lucifer's fate will be - Hell forever***. Wouldn't a kind, loving God think, "Ah, look, I just won't make him." Remember that He knows how much Lucifer will suffer.
Anyway, Lucifer rebels and tries to defeat God. This is an impossible task, and not a fair fight, because God can do anything - He's always going to win. It's like the All Blacks playing a primary school rugby team. Hey, no mean jokes about the ABs!
Make no mistake, God is responsible for Lucifer's (now known as Satan) actions. He just won't own up to it.
I'd really like to hear Robert's views on this - if he reads it.

First of all God is evidently not 'in' his creation. A God, by definition is outside of creation and therefore outside of time. God is....'I am'.
Secondly. hey, lets be fair, I don't know all the answers to your questions, but looking at it to the best of my ability, and it is fun to think about these things, a possible explanation is as follows. Should God not have created any spirits beside himself because a few might go bad? I've heard it said that maybe the reason that Lucifer rebelled was because he was furious that mankind would eventually be above him! It is thought that Lucifer is not just an 'angel' but the very highest group of spirits God created of which there are only a few (7?) and these are cherubims, I could be wrong about which group.
It's like the Judas. He didn't have to betray Jesus.
Maybe the answer is that God is really, really good at putting things right. Lucifer lets God down, ok ....time for plan B.
When you think about our puny minds; it is better to just accept that God is God and follow his advice than try to outthink him!

In simple words and concept you've pretty much nailed it (no offence to Robert's Jesus).
Theologians and apologists should sit up and take notice. When some simple logic is applied to the whole god as creator and an all-knowing being idea then the whole house of cards falls and no matter what trite nonsense is wheeled out in explanation (see Robert's comment above), the whole thing is exposed as bullshit.
